A study by the National Sleep Foundation (Sleep Health Index) stated that only 35% of Americans polled labeled their quality of sleep as “Good” between Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, and Poor. Americans report good sleep quantity, but not quality. Those who report poor quality sleep also report poor quality health. “The findings from the Sleep Health Index demonstrate a need for sleep health improvement,” said David Cloud, CEO of the National Sleep Foundation. “Sleep is an important factor in overall health. We suggest that Americans and their doctors talk about sleep as a vital sign of health and well-being.”—What does sleep quality have to do with your swimming pool? Swimming pools are amazing tools to improve overall health AND sleep. Exercise and relaxation are key focal points when trying to return your sleep quality and quantity back to healthy levels.

Swimming Pools Can Improve Sleep

Here are a few reasons why owning a swimming pool can improve health and sleep:

1.  Exercise:  In 2013 the National Sleep Foundation found that there is a correlation between exercise and sleep.  Those who exercise indicated they received a good night’s sleep nearly every night compared to those who did not. Swimming is an amazing aerobic activity that works out all major muscle groups with the water providing resistance, and allowing for a much more relaxing workout than your typical run or jog. Exercising in a pool can also be done any time, day or night, in the privacy of your backyard. If you plan on going for a late night swim, we recommend keeping it slow and relaxing though. Exercise too close to bed time (regardless of being in a pool or not) can raise adrenaline, and keep you awake.

2.  Water Temperature:  Warm water can raise your body temperature, which can cause fatigue and make you sleepy.  In turn, cool water can also create fatigue as your body works to stay warm.  So whether you are in a warm spa, or a cold pool, the temperature can help prepare you for sleep. Couple that with a warm cup of chamomile tea before bed, and you’ll be drifting off to sleep in no time.

3.  Relaxation: Reduce stress and enable yourself to relax and unwind by taking a warm soak in the spa with pulsating/massaging jets.  If you suffer from insomnia, a spa is a great place to practice breathing and relaxation techniques.

4.  Massage:  Spas, and even some pools, have pulsating water that can not only soothe sore muscles, but also relieves aches and pains.  The massaging of the water can also help you relax, leading to a better sleep.
